While radiation leaks present a threat to populations in and around energy facilities, their intentional counterpart – the “dirty bomb” – is a mobile, targeted product used to intentionally contaminate the population of a specified area.  The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC) defines a “dirty bomb” as “one type of a ‘radiological dispersal device’ (RDD) that combines a conventional explosive, such as dynamite, with radioactive material”.  Today, dirty bombs are one item in the long list of weapons that terrorist groups may use to intimidate, contaminate, gain publicity, and destroy the economy of a given entity or area.

Zistos Corporation, a Holbrook, NY based business specializing in portable video inspection products, recently released its Video Radiological Adapter (VRAD), a weatherproof stand-alone radiation sensor designed to be integrated into existing CCTV technology or added to a new system.

The VRAD is mounted in the area of interest and integrated into the security system, its surveillance cameras, monitors and DVRs.  Alarms representing various warning levels are displayed on images already available and recorded on the security management system, allowing for a timely response and when necessary, evacuation.   By capitalizing on a facility’s current security technology, costs are minimized and efficiency maximized without compromising security.

With the contemporary threat of intentional radiated leaks, high-volume public and private facilities such as airports, seaports, subway stations, hospitals, hotels and shopping malls must look beyond security systems based purely on CCTV and access control.  These entities must now provide solutions to protect themselves and those individuals who occupy their facilities from the potentially catastrophic outcomes of radiation terrorism.
